Nitrate in Wisconsin Groundwater: Sources and Concerns
نویسندگان
چکیده
residues is applied to the land, it undergoes numerous chemical, physical and biological reactions. In its nitrate form (NO3), it can move down through soil into groundwater. Nitrate can also be a factor in surface water quality problems. In sufficient concentrations, nitrate in drinking water can be toxic to infants. Scientists are also investigating possible links between nitrate and other long-term health effects, though none have yet been demonstrated.

Nitrate Loading and Impacts on Central Wisconsin Groundwater Basins
Nitrate is Wisconsin’s most common groundwater pollutant. Agriculture is the largest nitrate source, accounting for about 90% of that which leaches to groundwater (Shaw, 1994). Only recently have the university and state agencies put together sufficient pieces of the nitrate puzzle to realize the extent of nitrate pollution (e.g., Central Wisconsin Groundwater Center, 1994; LeMasters and Baldoc...

The present study investigated NO3- and Br- contamination in groundwater of Arak aquifer, Markazi province, Iran. Correlation and factor analyzes were used to detecti nterrelations and sources of NO3- and Br- ion concentration and other physicochemical variables. No correlation was observed between NO3- and otherscontents, but a positive correlation was identified between Br-and other majorvari...

Background and Objectives: Nowadays nitrate concentrations in surface water and especially in groundwater have increased in many locations in the world. Since nitrates cause many health and environmental concerns, increased nitrate concentrations in groundwater have led to rendered aquifers unusable as water sources. So, as the water demand is still increasing the throughout the world, decreasi...
متن کاملNitrate Removal for On-Lot Sewage Treatment Systems: The POINT System
Nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) in groundwater is becoming a ubiquitous problem, particularly in rural and suburban areas where domestic water supplies are obtained from individual on-lot water supply wells. Nitrate in groundwater can come from natural sources such as soil, bedrock and organic material; however, the overwhelming loading of nitrate originates from anthropogenic sources, particularly ag...
متن کاملSources of Chemical Contaminations and Classification with Emphasis on Drinking Water
Groundwater contamination is a serious problem facing the countries. Because groundwater is vulnerable to contamination from a variety of sources, and, once contaminated, it is very difficult to restore to its original quality. The main objective of this study was evaluation of groundwater quality in Shahrekord aquifer and finding the source of the groundwater contamination. Some of the chemica...
